Reference for Reflow Profile Compliance Toolkit Skill
This document provides background context and external reference links relevant to the reflow_profile_compliance_toolkit skill.
1. Background
Reflow soldering is a thermally sensitive PCB assembly process where reliability depends on keeping the time–temperature profile within limits defined by:
- Solder alloy behavior (melting range / liquidus concept, wetting time)
- Board thermal mass and geometry (heating lag and temperature gradients)
- Oven design (zone layout, airflow, atmosphere control) and conveyor configuration
- Industry guidance and vendor application notes
In production environments, these limits are typically captured in a process handbook. That handbook acts as the authoritative basis for compliance checks and auditability.
2. Primary Data Sources
2.1 Process Handbook and Machine Guideline
A handbook is usually treated as the single source of truth for definitions and acceptance criteria, such as:
- Definitions of thermal regions (preheat/soak/reflow/cooling)
- Ramp-rate limits (°C/s)
- Liquidus temperature definitions and alloy-specific considerations
- Time-above-liquidus (TAL) windows and intent (wetting / IMC formation)
- Peak temperature margins above liquidus
- Conveyor speed / dwell / time-in-oven feasibility rules
2.2 MES and Production Run Logs
MES data provides run-level metadata used to interpret and compare profiles, e.g.:
- Run identifiers and product family grouping
- Recipe and machine identifiers
- Conveyor speed and throughput indicators
- Board geometry and thermal-mass proxies
- Solder alloy fields (often including a liquidus value or alloy family)
2.3 Thermocouple data
Thermocouple measurements provide the evidence needed to evaluate:
- Heating behavior in defined regions (e.g., ramp characteristics)
- Duration above critical thresholds (e.g., TAL)
- Peak temperature achieved and minimum peak across sensors (“worst-case”)
2.4 Defect Records
Inspection and test records are commonly used to connect process compliance to outcomes:
- Defect counts by type and inspection stage
- First-pass yield, rework, and scrap signals
- Lot-level summaries for comparing runs and recipes

3.3 PCB/assembly defect datasets

Typical engineering applications:
- Recipe qualification & change control: confirm new recipes stay within handbook limits.
- Maintenance and drift detection: track systematic shifts that may indicate airflow issues, heater degradation, conveyor calibration drift, or sensor problems.
- Line-to-line comparability: normalize and compare runs across lines/ovens by applying the same handbook definitions and “worst-case sensor” logic.
- Root-cause triage for defects: correlate defect spikes with profile violations.
- Supplier/customer reporting: produce structured compliance summaries that reference handbook definitions and trace back to run IDs for investigation.
